What to Expect from a Health Coaching Session

Here at Exergonic Coaching we aim to help individuals understand how their body works, what their current health status is, and what steps to take so that you can start to reach your potential and unlock your biology.

There are so many health trends and fads around today coupled with the constant advertisements of unhealthy habits and lifestyles that it can be difficult to know where to start. At Exergonic Coaching we use proven, and simple methods, to bring our bodies and minds back to homeostasis. We help people discover their inner-strength to make changes that are effective and long lasting. These changes are sustained with effective behaviour change methods and support – taking small steps towards the larger goals.

A health coaching session is a collaborative partnership between you and a one of our trained professionals who can help you achieve your health and wellness goals. Unlike a doctor who prescribes treatments or a dietitian who gives a meal plan, a health coach empowers you to make sustainable behavioural changes by helping you find your own motivation and solutions.

The First Session: Setting the Foundation

The initial session is typically longer (60-90 minutes) and focuses on building rapport and understanding your unique situation. You can expect:

  • Warm Welcome and Health History: The coach will create a comfortable, non-judgmental space for you to share your story. You’ll discuss your health history, current lifestyle, and any challenges you’ve faced. It’s helpful to bring any relevant medical information or past wellness plans.
  • Identifying Your Goals: This is a crucial part of the process. The coach will ask open-ended questions to help you clarify what you want to achieve. Goals are not just about weight loss or exercise; they can be about improving sleep, managing stress, developing a better relationship with food, or increasing your energy levels. The focus is on what is most important to you.
  • Creating a Plan: Together, you and the coach will develop a realistic and actionable plan. This isn’t a rigid, one-size-fits-all program. It’s a personalised roadmap with small, manageable steps tailored to your lifestyle and preferences.
  • Setting Expectations: The coach will explain what health coaching is and isn’t. They will clarify their role, discuss the frequency and length of future sessions, and establish the “rules of engagement,” including confidentiality

You can receive an in-depth, non-invasive physical health assessment that can provide a multitude of insights and health metrics giving you a clear picture of where you are ‘at’. If you are concerned about what may be uncovered during any health assessments then do not fear, as we have a wealth of knowledge around physical, nutritional, and mental wellbeing along with effective interventions – we don’t just give the bad news, but we also give the good news!

Subsequent Sessions: Progress and Problem-Solving

After the initial session, subsequent meetings are often shorter (30-60 minutes) and focus on your progress and any obstacles you’ve encountered. You can expect:

  • Reviewing Progress: You’ll check in on the action steps you agreed to take. This is a time to celebrate your wins, no matter how small, and reflect on what worked and what didn’t.
  • Problem-Solving: The coach will help you troubleshoot any barriers or setbacks you faced. Instead of telling you what to do, they’ll use skillful questioning to guide you in finding your own solutions. This process builds your confidence and problem-solving skills for the long term.
  • Accountability and Motivation: The coach acts as a source of positive reinforcement and accountability. They will help you stay motivated and on track by connecting your daily actions back to your bigger, long-term goals.
  • Adjusting the Plan: The plan is a living document. You and your coach will refine your goals and action steps as your needs and circumstances evolve.

As Exergonic Coaching is also a Community Interest Company you need not worry about how expensive our services may be as we are fully engaged in the charitable sector, linking in and supporting other health and wellbeing programmes. There are many opportunities that arise from this where you will be eligible for a free place on one of our funded courses.

Key Things to Remember

  • You’re in Control: Health coaching is client-centered. You set the agenda, and you are the expert on your own life. The coach’s role is to facilitate your process, not to direct it.
  • It’s a Partnership: The relationship is a collaborative one. Your success depends on your active participation and commitment.
  • It’s Not Therapy: While a health coach provides a supportive environment, they are not licensed to diagnose or treat clinical mental health conditions. They can, however, help you manage lifestyle factors that affect your mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Tools and Techniques: A health coach might introduce various tools and techniques, such as motivational interviewing, mindfulness exercises, or food and mood journaling, to help you develop new skills and habits.
